█ JOB SPECIFICATIONS (COPYFITTING/ESTIMATING)
▒ ═══════════════════════════════════════════
▒
░ 1. Enter the number of characters without commas.
░
░ 2. If the number of characters is unknown, enter 0.
░ The cursor will jump to the next question, number
░ of pages. If a number other than 0 is entered for
░ characters, the cursor will skip to point size.
░
░ 3. Enter the point size. This is the size of the type-
░ set character expressed in points (a measure of 72
░ points to the inch). Type is measured from the top
░ of an ascender (or capital letter) to the bottom of
░ a descender (e.g., a lower case y). Half point sizes
░ are allowed by ALPHACALC.
█
█ 4. Enter the leading. Effectively, this measure is the
░ space between lines; the value expressed represents
░ the total of the point size plus the additional
░ space. For example, 9 point type on 10 point leading
▒ shows one point of extra space between the lines.
▒ It is calculated by measuring from the baseline of
░ one line of type to the baseline of the next line.

░ 5. Enter the column width. Enter the number of picas
░ for the width of one column. ALPHACALC will accept
░ picas and points. Do not enter partial picas in base
░ ten decimals. Enter as points. There are 12 points
░ in a pica. (20 and 1/2 picas would be 20 picas 6
░ points 20 and one third would be 20 picas 4 points).
░
░ 6. Enter characters per pica. Use values from the
░ font specifications from your typesetter or from
▒ the typeface manufacturer. Or you may use the
▒ guide supplied at the right of the screen. Three
░ typeface width values are shown. As examples, Hel-
░ vetica has a set width common to the larger type-
░ faces. The values for Times Roman represent the
░ middle range. Garamond #3 is an example of a small
█ typeface.

░ The following chart lists width values for a number
░ of typefaces.
